Bill Gates meets Dolly Chaiwala Sunil Patil, a resident of Nagpur who is better known online as “Dolly Chaiwalla” and whose video with Microsoft founder Bill Gates went viral, revealed on Thursday that he did not first recognize the billionaire businessman and only learned who he was after their encounter went viral.
While in India, Gates posted a video to Instagram on Wednesday featuring Patil, a well-known tea vendor in Nagpur, in which he lauded the country’s creative culture. In Hyderabad, the video was recorded. “Everywhere you look in India, innovation is present, even in the making of a basic cup of tea,” the internet mogul and philanthropist said in a post that was published alongside the video.

Bill Gates meets Dolly Chaiwala Speaking with the journalists at his makeshift tea stand on the side of the road next to the former VCA stadium in the Sadar neighbourhood, Patil said he was simply making tea for “someone from overseas” and had no idea who the man (Gates) in the video was. “I didn’t realize who I had served the tea to until the following day when I went back to Nagpur (from Hyderabad),” he added, adding that Gates enjoyed the fragrant tea he had made.

Patil said he didn’t know he was being flown to Hyderabad for a photo shoot starring the renowned American businessman.
Dolly Chaiwalla said he hoped to offer Prime Minister Narendra Modi tea one day.
