Delhi’s Finance Minister, Atishi, Unveils the Fiscal Blueprint for 2024-25, Announcing a Monthly Grant of Rs 1000 for Every Woman Above 18
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, spearheaded by Chief Minister Atishi, disclosed its tenth fiscal plan for the year 2024–25 on the recent Monday. The government introduced the Chief Minister’s Women’s Dignity Scheme, ensuring a monthly stipend of Rs 1000 for every woman aged 18 and beyond residing in the capital. Atishi, serving as the Finance Minister, made this proclamation during the budget presentation in the assembly.
This marks Atishi’s inaugural budget following her inclusion in the cabinet the previous year. In her maiden budget speech, she expressed that the Kejriwal-led government has tirelessly dedicated the past nine years to the well-being and prosperity of the populace. Adding a thematic touch, she revealed that the budget draws inspiration from “Ram Rajya.”
Touting the changing landscape of Delhi and AAP ministers‘ effective governance, she accentuated, “…In 2014, the GSDP of Delhi was Rs 4.95 lakh crores, and in the last ten years, the GSDP of Delhi has increased two and a half times to Rs 11.08 lakh crores.” Furthermore, she highlighted that the per capita income of Delhi, once Rs 2.47 lakhs, now surpasses the national average by two and a half times. The AAP presented a budget of Rs 76,000 crore in the Vidhan Sabha.
During her address, Atishi asserted that the government has successfully challenged traditional beliefs, ensuring that children from affluent families thrive while those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds overcome hurdles. “Today the children of laborers are destined for roles as managing directors. 2,121 children studying in Kejriwal government schools have excelled in the JEE and NEET examinations,” she added. According to the FM of Delhi, the education budget for this year stands at Rs 16,396 crore, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to education. In 2015, the education budget witnessed a twofold increase, with a quarter of total expenditure exclusively earmarked for education.
Delhi’s Budget Anchored in the Concept of “Ram Rajya” Reliable government sources revealed that the budget revolves around the Ram Rajya concept, marking the tenth budget under the AAP government. An undisclosed official stated that meticulous efforts have been made to address all sections of society in this election year. Anticipated priorities include the development of unauthorized colonies, with a potential fiscal boost of around ₹1,000 crore allocated for initiatives such as enhancing road infrastructure, water supply pipelines, and sewer networks. These measures are expected to take precedence in the government’s plan for the fiscal year 2024–25.
