Ghazal Singer Pankaj Udhas Passes Away at 72 years after Prolonged illness
Renowned ghazal singer pankaj udhas and Padma Shri awardee Pankaj Udhas, best known for “Chitthi Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein”, died on Monday following prolonged illness, his daughter Nayab said. He was 72.
His daughter Nayaab Udhas took to Instagram to announce the news and wrote, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to prolonged illness.”
The ghazal world has been governed by Pankaj Udhas for a number of years. His smooth, soothing voice is very identifiable. Gujarati by birth, she received her tabla training at Rajkot’s Sangeet Natak Akademi.
This song from the 1986 movie “Naam” contributed to Udhas’s rise to popularity. He began his career with the ghazal album “Aahat” (1980) and went on to release three more successful albums, “Mukarar,” “Tarrannum,” and “Mehfil). It was a hiatus that contributed to his noticeable presence in Bollywood.
Udhas made his movie debut in Kamna way back in the early 1970s, but the movie was shelved. This was a great letdown, as becoming a “singer” required years of hardship.
