NBDSA Directs Aaj Tak to Remove Controversial Video Depicting Rahul Gandhi as Robber
The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has directed Hindi news channel Aaj Tak to remove a fictional video depicting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a robber. The NBDSA deemed the video inappropriate and ordered its removal from the channel, YouTube, and other online platforms.
The controversial video, aired on the show ‘Black and White’ on March 24, 2023, followed Gandhi’s defamation conviction in a Surat court on March 23, 2023, for his statement “All thieves have Modi surname.” The National President of the Indian Youth Congress filed a complaint with the NBDSA on March 31, 2023, alleging malicious intent by Aaj Tak.
The complaint stated that the video falsely portrayed Gandhi as a robbery accused, despite his efforts to address offenses committed by Nirav Modi and seek accountability from the Indian government. The complainant argued that the video aimed to tarnish Gandhi’s reputation, Congress party, and Indian Youth Congress, creating distress among supporters.
Aaj Tak defended itself, claiming the anchor did not suggest Gandhi’s conviction for a heinous offense and that the video’s fictional story was not specific to anyone, including Rahul Gandhi. The channel emphasized that the broadcast was influenced by Priyanka Gandhi’s tweets questioning why Rahul was targeted compared to others.
The NBDSA, while acknowledging the accurate portrayal of Priyanka Gandhi’s tweets, criticized the fictional video’s taste and ordered its removal from all platforms. Additionally, the NBDSA advised Aaj Tak to exercise caution when airing such fictional content in future broadcasts.
In conclusion, the NBDSA’s directive underscores the responsibility of media outlets in maintaining ethical standards, urging Aaj Tak to take corrective actions and be mindful of content choices in the future.
