In response to the tragic Hathras Stampede on July 2, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Supreme Court. The PIL requests the appointment of a five-member expert committee, supervised by a retired Supreme Court judge, to investigate the incident thoroughly.
The petition urges the Court to direct the State of Uttar Pradesh to submit a status report on the incident promptly. Additionally, it calls for legal action against individuals, authorities, and officials responsible for negligence leading to the stampede.
To prevent future incidents, petitioner Vishal Tiwari seeks directives from State Governments to issue comprehensive guidelines for managing large public gatherings. The stampede occurred during a religious Satsang event and resulted in the tragic loss of at least 100 lives.
The plea highlights concerns about responsibility lapses and negligence in public safety measures by government authorities. It references past incidents across the country where mismanagement and neglect have resulted in significant public casualties.
