In a significant development, the President of India has given assent to three pivotal bills aimed at reforming the country’s criminal justice system. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam have received the green light, set to replace the existing Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act.
The official notification of this landmark decision is available on the Rashtrapati Bhavan website, although it is yet to be published in the Gazette of India.
These transformative bills were initially introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 11 under the names Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill. Subsequently, they underwent thorough scrutiny in a parliamentary committee led by Brij Lal. Following this examination, the bills were successfully passed by the Lok Sabha on December 20 and later by the Rajya Sabha on December 21.
This legislative overhaul signifies a comprehensive effort to modernize and enhance India’s criminal justice system, marking a crucial step towards ensuring justice, security, and accountability in the nation.
